We’re pleased to announce a newly negotiated change in our Collective Bargaining Agreement: reassigned time can now be designated as overload and banked (or unbanked) for future use.
Previously, only teaching overload could be banked. Now, with the removal of the word “teaching” from Section D.3.0 Overload Banking, the provision has been expanded. The updated language states:
“Banking” is an option available to faculty with overload assignments, as defined in C.8.0 and C.9.0. In lieu of payment for overload assignments, faculty members may elect to bank those LHE for future use as released time. This LHE shall be calculated according to the formulas and tables in section C.2.1.
How This Benefits Faculty
This change gives faculty more flexibility and greater control over their workloads and compensation. Here’s how:
Faculty can now prioritize teaching as part of their 15 LHE contractual base load.
Reassigned time beyond 15 LHE can be designated as overload, banked for future leave, or paid at the non-teaching hourly rate, which is not capped (see D.2.4).
This avoids the Step 10 pay cap that is applied on teaching assignments designated as overload due to reassign time being part of the base load.
What You Need to Do
When reviewing your load card in SURF, be sure to designate your reassign time as overload and apply any teaching assignments first to your base 15 LHE load. This ensures you're maximizing the benefit of the new provision.
